You can close the account yourself, under Account. It is immediate and there is no cooling off period during which we quietly keep everything.

Before you press it

• If you use a domain you own, change its MX records to your new provider first. Mail then goes there instead of arriving at a service that no longer knows you. Nothing about your domain depends on us.
• Download your data if you want a copy of your aliases, recipients and settings. See Taking your data with you.
• Tell the sites that matter. Any site still holding an alias will keep sending to it, and after deletion that mail is refused.

What deletion removes

Your aliases, recipients, rules, blocklist, labels, tokens, app passwords, and the account itself. If you used the mailbox here, its contents go with it.

What is not removed

• Usernames, which stay reserved so that a stranger cannot pick up a subdomain that still receives your old mail.
• Records we are required to keep, which is a short and specific list: abuse and legal correspondence, kept for two years because it documents a decision somebody may contest. That is written out in the privacy notice rather than left vague.

What was never there to remove

Forwarded messages, because we never kept a copy.
