Your own domains

Leaving without losing your addresses

The domain is yours, so the exit is one DNS change.

Everything about a custom domain here is designed so that leaving costs you nothing.

The exit

Point the MX record at your new provider. Mail stops arriving here and starts arriving there, in the time your DNS takes to propagate. Nothing needs to be requested, unlocked or approved.

What you lose and do not lose

You keep every address, because the addresses belong to your domain. What stays behind is the forwarding, the rules and the aliases list, which are settings here rather than mail.

Download your data first if you want the list of what existed and where it pointed. See Taking your data with you.

Addresses on our domains

Those cannot move, because they are addresses on a domain we run. This is the honest reason to use a domain of your own for anything you expect to keep for years: an address on skudo.org depends on this service existing, and an address on your domain does not.

We would rather say that than pretend otherwise. The point of the service is to reduce what you depend on, and that includes us.

If the service ever stops

The canary and the transparency page carry our commitments about notice. What is guaranteed by design rather than by promise is simpler: your domain is yours, its DNS is under your control, and moving it away needs nothing from us.

Written for people using Skudo. If a page here is wrong or missing, tell us.
