On your personal subdomain and on any domain you own, you do not have to create an address before using it. Write october-sale@yourname.skudo.org on a form, and the alias comes into existence when the first message arrives.

Why it is useful

You can invent an address at the counter, on the phone, or in a form on a site that will not let you leave and come back. No app, no dashboard, no interruption.

Why you might turn it off

An address that exists the moment anybody guesses it means anybody can generate mail into your account by guessing. In practice this shows up as spam to addresses you never gave out, info@, sales@, admin@.

With catch-all off, mail to an address you have not created is refused at our end. Nothing arrives and nothing is stored.

The middle path

Leave catch-all on and rely on switching off the ones that go bad. Every address that appears this way is listed in your dashboard with the date it first received mail, so a guessing spree is visible rather than silent.

Not on the bare shared domain

Catch-all applies to your own subdomain and your own domains. On the bare shared domain, addresses have to be created, because there the local part is a shared space and the first person to receive on it would be claiming it from everybody else.
